Information profile @ a Glance
  • MSDS is an acronym for Material Safety Data Sheet
  • A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the  procedures for handling or working with hazardous materials/ chemicals. MSDS's include information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill/leak procedures.
  • MSDS and labels are instruments for ‘hazard communication’ and are designed to ensure the safety of people who’ll come in contact with substances. Communication being key, good translations of phrases for each target country is very important, and in most cases, is a strict legal obligation
  • GHS is an acronym for the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.
  • The GHS is a new system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labeling of chemicals
  • The content of labels will change significantly. Under GHS, the square orange symbols familiar to those in the EU will be replaced by a new set of pictograms which will be diamond shaped with the symbols in
black on a white background with a red border.
  • Under the new Regulations there will be:
New scientific criteria to assess hazardous properties of chemicals;Indications of Danger will be replaced with Signal Words; Two new harmonized hazard warning symbols for labels - known as ‘pictograms’
  • The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration, OSHA, is a federal government agency in the U.S. Department of Labor
  • The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) are important for chemical manufacturers
  • GHS is not applicable for all counties. It’s a model regulation that countries are free to adopt (and adapt to some degree). REACH and GHS have no real association to each other, apart from the fact that REACH requires a Safety Datasheet, and GHS specifies the classification scheme, format and content of an SDS.
