  • Putty is a generic term for a plastic material similar in texture to clay or dough typically used in domestic construction and repair as a sealant or filler.
  • Painter's Putty is typically a linseed oil based product used for filling holes, minor cracks and defacements in wood only.
  • Common putty, as used by carpenters, painters, and glaziers, is whiting mixed with linseed oil to the consistency of dough. Plasterers use a fine lime mortar that is called putty.
  • Putties can also be made intumescent, in which case they are used for firestopping as well as for padding of electrical outlet boxes in fire-resistance rated drywall assemblies.
  • Putty is made up of two basic ingredients. Whiting and linseed oil. Then there are various things people add to the basic mix.
  • Cementing material made of whiting (finely powdered calcium carbonate) and boiled linseed oil. It is beaten or kneaded to the consistency of dough and is used to secure sheets of glass in sashes, to stop crevices in woodwork, and to fill nail holes.
  • The name putty is also applied to substances resembling putty, such as iron putty, a mixture of ferric oxide and linseed oil; and red-lead putty, a mixture of red and white lead and linseed oil. Certain doughlike plastics are also called putty. Putty powder (tin oxide) is used in polishing glass, granite, and metal.
  • Glazing putty is a mix of boiled linseed oil, calcium carbonate and probably other additives that remain the secret of the conspiratorial, world-dominating putty industry. It is mixed at the factory to a consistency that can be worked to a smooth surface without excessive sticking to the tool, or putty knife.
  •  Every stained glass panel needs to be glazed- the final and most important step in completing a lead panel. Glazing protects stained glass for years to come by strengthening and waterproofing indoor and outdoor stained glass panels. Correctly glazed panels have the added benefit of uniformly colored leading and displaying your glass art in its best light.
  • Glazing is the process of working cement or putty between the glass and the lead came, a necessary step even if the panel is for indoor use. Many a lead panel has failed over time simply due to improper application.
  • Specifically putty has been used extensively in glazing for fixing and sealing panes of glass into wooden frames (or sashes), although its use is decreasing with the prevalence of PVC and metal window frames which use synthetic sealants such as silicone.
