  • Iron oxides yield pigments (see Iron oxide pigments) that are widely used in the cosmetic field. They are considered to be nontoxic, moisture resistant, and nonbleeding. Iron oxides graded safe for cosmetic use are produced synthetically in order to avoid the inclusion of ferrous or ferric oxides, and impurities normally found in naturally occurring iron oxides. Some of these oxides are used in ceramic applications, particularly in glazing. Iron oxides, along with oxides of other metals, provide the colours in some glazes after being fired at a high temperature.
  • Iron(II) oxide (ferrous oxide, FeO, also known as wüstite in its mineral form): The black-coloured powder in particular can cause explosions as it readily ignites. Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide (Fe2O3): known in its natural state as rouge or hematite (also 'haematite'), but also purified for use as a coating in magnetic audio and computer media. In a dry or alkaline environment it can cause passivation and inhibits rust. It is also a component of rust. Iron(II,III) oxide or ferrous ferric oxide (Fe3O4): better known as the black-coloured mineral magnetite or lodestone also seen on Mars. Also a main source of iron, magnetite is an iron ore. This form of iron oxide tends to occur when iron corrodes underwater, and so is often found inside tanks or below the waterline of ships.
  • Iron oxides are interesting due to their catalytic, magnetic, and semiconducting properties, and because they are produced during corrosion. Their applications Include, e.g., usage as pigments, catalysts in styrene synthesis,1 and as a material for high-density magnetic storage.
  • Demand in the US for color pigments, including inorganic, organic and specialty types, is forecast to increase 4.4 percent per year to $3.8 billion in 2011, driven by a shift toward more expensive high-performance organic pigments and specialty types. Steady increases in large pigment markets such as paints and coatings will support volume growth. Trade continues to have a large impact on the US pigment industry (imports and exports account for about 25 percent of demand and production value, respectively). Imports mostly consist of lowerend pigments while higher-quality products are exported.
  • In 2003, the world market value for colored pigments (inorganic and organic) was $8.33 billion—about $1.88 billion for inorganic color pigments and $6.45 billion for organic pigments, of which high-performance organic pigments accounted for $0.9 billion.
  • Western Europe is the largest regional market for iron oxide pigments, followed by North America,China accounts for the largest share of world production , Germany produced over 70% of Western Europe’s supply or about 18% of global supply in 2000 , India is The largest producer of natural iron oxide pigments. Western Europe is a net exporter, while other regions are net importers.
  • Natural Iron Oxide Pigments were produced in at least 10 countries in 2012
  • Consumption of pigment
minerals were expanding    significantly for certain emerging markets, such as Latin America and Asia, especially China
  • Growth in the Iron Oxide Pigment market is expected to continue to increase, mostly because Iron Oxide Pigment’s largest end market, construction, is increasing in China, Latin America, and the United States
