Contents on the CD Rom

  • Iodine is a dark gray, purple black solid that sublimes at standard temperatures into a purple-pink gas that has an irritating odor. This halogen forms compounds with many elements, but is less active than the other members of its Group VII (halogens) and has some metallic-like properties.
  • Seawater contains 0.05 ppm (parts per million) iodine which means that there are approximately 76 billion pounds of iodine in the world’s oceans. Iodine was first discovered in seaweed. Dried seaweeds, particularly those of the Liminaria family, contain as much as 0.45% iodine.
  • Iodine is readily available, and its chemical properties allow it to be converted easily into hydriodic acid, the preferred reagent in the illicit production  of d-methamphetamine.
  • Iodine and its compounds are generally marketed in the form of crude iodine, resublimed iodine, calcium iodate, calcium iodide, potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and numerous organic compounds.
  • Japan and Chile are the larges t producers of iodine in the world and ac count for 99% of the U.S. iodine imports. All domestic iodine production is from iodine-rich natural brines in the deep sub surface of the A nadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma.
  • Chile is the world’s leading iodine producing nation. Japan is second. Russia also produces significant amounts of elemental iodine.
  • End uses for iodine in 1999 were estimated from a United States Geological Survey (USGS) canvass of consumers as follows (by percentage): sanitation (45%); animal feed (27%); pharmaceutical (10%); heat catalyst (8%); stabilizers (5%); and other (5%)
  • Production of iodine in the United States has remained steady ranging from 1,270 to 1,620 metric tons between the years 1996 and 2000.
  • The total US market for therapeutic radioactive iodine products is estimated to range between $14 and $18 million, but could be heading for growth as a new generation of radio pharmaceuticals for cancer reach the market.
  • Iodine crystals, which are used legally for a variety of commercial and medical purposes, frequently are used illegally to produce high quality d-methamphetamine.
  • Companies in several countries throughout the world produce and sell iodine crystals commercially.
  • Iodine is used in pharmaceuticals, antiseptics, medicine, food supplements, dyes, catalysts and photography.
  • Iodine is used to treat cuts and scrapes on the skin as a tincture of iodine, which is a dilute mixture of alcohol and iodine. Iodine is also used in lasers (silver iodide), in dyes, and as a nutrient added to table salt.
