  • Ethylbenzene is a colorless liquid that smells like gasoline.
  • Ethylbenzene is an organic chemical compound which is an aromatic hydrocarbon.
  • When it is added to gasoline it becomes a member of a group of chemicals called "BTEX compounds"
  • Ethylbenzene occurs naturally in coal tar and petroleum. It is also found in many man-made products, including paints, inks, and insecticides.
  • Ethylbenzene will evaporate rapidly from water, and will be degraded by microbes. It binds only moderately to aquatic sediment and to soils.
  • The manufacture of ethylbenzene involves the alkylation of benzene with ethylene to yield a mixture of alkylated benzenes and excess benzene.
  • Processes using zeolite catalysts offer low benzene-to-ethylene ratios, which reduces the size of equipment, and lowers the production of byproducts.
  • Its major use is in the petrochemical industry as an intermediate compound for the production of styrene, which in turn is used for making polystyrene, a commonly used plastic material.
  • Ethylbenzene is a compound used in paints, lacquers, adhesives, inks, and cleaning materials.
  • Other uses include as a solvent, in fuels, and to make other chemicals.
  • Ethylbenzene, as with styrene, is closely linked to the automotive and construction industries, and is subject to fluctuations in GDP.
  • EB demand runs parallel to that of styrene, and styrene is a mature and stable commodity, used in many homopolymer, copolymer and terpolymer applications.
  • Though demand for styrene is growing globally at about 5 percent annually, in the U.S. styrene is only growing at 2 percent at best. Thus, EB is poised for only modest growth of 2 percent.
  • Historically, global EB/SM demand has grown at around 4-5%/year and it is expected to continue at a slightly slower 3.5-4%/year.
  • In western Europe, long term growth in demand is estimated at 1-2%/year while growth in eastern Europe is expected to be a healthier 3-4%/year.
  • Consumption is expected to grow the fastest in the Middle East and Asia.
  • US domestic demand for EB is expected to grow at around 3%/year through to 2010.
  • US demand will grow from 5.80m tonnes in 2006 to 6.51m tonnes in 2010.
  • The growth in demand will be in China and supported by new EB/SM capacity in the Middle East and northeast Asia.
  • Currently more than 15 billion pounds of ethylbenzene are used annually in the United States.
  • Significant growth in EB/SM demand in China and other developing countries is expected to be met by new capacity in the Middle East and northeast Asia.
  • EB’s major shortcoming is that it is essentially a one market segment product - styrene. Moreover, as the styrene is produced with captive EB there is not much noticeable market activity.
