  • Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is a colorless liquid with an odor similar to mothballs. MIBK is also known as 4-methyl-2-pentanone, hexone and isopropylacetone. While it is usually in liquid form, MIBK can change into a gas. MIBK will dissolve in water, alcohols, benzenes and ethers.
  • Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is a ketone that is widely used as a solvent. Unlike the other common ketone solvents, acetone and MEK, MIBK has quite low solubility in water, allowing it to be used for liquid-liquid extraction. It has a similar polarity to the ester solvent ethyl acetate, but higher stability towards aqueous acid or base than ethyl acetate.
  • MIBK occurs naturally in oranges, grapes and vinegar. MIBK is used as a solvent in factories that produce paints, rubber products, chemicals and machinery.
  • Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is the most important product obtained from acetone. It is used as a solvent for inks, protective coating and epoxy, vinyl and acrylic resins, in the extraction of metallic salts and as a reagent in the dewaxing of mineral oil.
  • There are two main routes leading to MIBK. The first one comes from acetone condensation through
    intermediates diacetone alcohol and mesityl oxide. MIBK is also produced from isopropanol in a mixed ketones process with disobutyl ketone (DIBK) and acetone as coproducts.
  • A catalyst mixture of activated Mg/Al hydrotalcite as solid base and Pd on carbon nanofibers was investigated for the single-stage liquid-phase synthesis of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) from acetone and H2 at 313 K and H2 pressures of 1-20 bar.
  • MIBK is also used as a process solvent to separate and purify various substances including: organic and inorganic chemicals, certain metal ions, antibiotics, and other pharmaceuticals.
  • MIBK is widely used as a solvent for various paints, lacquers, varnishes, adhesives, and rubber cements, and as an extractant for mineral oils.
  • MIBC’s major application is in the manufacture of lube oil additives, followed by its use as the principal flotation frother in treating copper and other ores.
  • MIBK consumption for antiozonants is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 4–4.5% in Asia and 1–1.5% in the United States and Western Europe. Global MIBK consumption will average growth of 2.5% per year .
  • Global MIBC statistics are difficult to estimate, but overall, MIBC will experience positive growth in lube oil applications and as a flotation frother.
  • The European market is said to be fairly balanced with steady demand. Consumption into rubber chemicals is described as healthy in both Asia and the US.
  • Globally, 64% of total MIBK output is consumed
    as a solvent, 18% as an extraction solvent, 10% as rubber processing chemicals and 3% as surfactants
