  • Mono Ethylene glycol or MEG is otherwise called as 1,2-ethanediol.
  • MEG is an alcohol with two -OH groups (a diol), a chemical compound widely used as an automotive antifreeze.
  • In its pure form, MEG is an odorless, colorless, syrupy liquid with a sweet taste. Ethylene glycol is toxic.
  • The major danger from ethylene glycol is ingestion. Due to its sweet taste, children and animals will sometimes consume large quantities of it if
    given access to antifreeze.
  • MEG is miscible with water and some other solvents, slightly soluble in ether, but practically insoluble in benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons,
    petroleum ethers, and oils.
  • Ethylene glycol is produced from ethylene, via the intermediate ethylene oxide.
  • Ethylene oxide reacts with water to produce ethylene glycol.
  • The major use of ethylene glycol is as an antifreeze in automobiles and personal computers.
  • Ethylene glycol can be recovered from the natural gas and reused as an inhibitor after a purification treatment that removes water and inorganic
  • Ethylene glycol has become increasingly important in the plastics industry for the manufacture of polyester fibers and resins, including
polyethylene terephthalate, which is used to make plastic bottles for soft drinks.
  • The antifreeze capabilities of ethylene glycol have made it an important component of vitrification mixtures for low-temperature preservation of
    biological tissues and organs.
  • Minor uses of ethylene glycol include the manufacture of capacitors, as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of 1,4-dioxane and as an
additive to prevent corrosion in liquid cooling systems for personal computers.
  • Ethylene glycol is commonly used in laboratories to precipitate out proteins in solution.
  • Ethylene glycol is also used in the manufacture of some vaccines, but it is not itself present in these injections.
  • Large bolus doses of ethylene glycol (EG) are developmentally toxic in rodents. However, human occupational and consumer exposures typically
involve low doses and slow dose-rates.
  • On a worldwide basis, approximately two-thirds of ethylene glycol is used as a chemical intermediate, with a further one-quarter used as an
    antifreeze in engine coolants.
  • MEG demand growth has been driven by a combination of increases in both domestic and export demand for downstream products, primarily polyester fibre and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin.
