  • The chemical compound trichloroethylene is a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
  • It is a clear non-flammable liquid with a sweet smell.
  • Its IUPAC name is  tri chloro ethene.
  • In industry, it is informally referred to by the abbreviations TCE, Trike and tri, and it is sold under a variety of trade names.
  • The 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane is then dehydrochlorinated to give trichloroethylene.
  • Trichloroethylene evaporates less easily from the soil than from surface water. It may stick to particles and remain for a long time.
  •  This can either be accomplished with an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide.
  • Most trichloroethylene is produced from ethylene.
  • First, ethylene is chlorinated over a ferric chloride catalyst to produce 1,2-dichloroethane.
  • The most significant findings to come out of the many long-term animal studies of the chemical are that it has caused liver and lung tumors in mice.
  • The National Toxicology Program  determined that trichloroethylene is “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer has determined that trichloroethylene is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
  • The significance of these tumors to human health is unclear due to species differences in both trichloroethylene metabolism and reaction to the metabolites.
  • An analysis of urinary TCE metabolites indicated that the workers were exposed to a time weighted average concentration of <50 ppm TCE.
  • Three of the 24 workers reported that they were unaffected by their working conditions, but the most prominent complaints consisted of 70.8% workers experiencing nausea, 54.2% headache, 33.3% dizziness, 25.0% fatigue, 25% nose and throat irritation, and 20.8% eye irritation.
  • Its major use was to extract vegetable oils from plant materials such as soy, coconut, and palm.
  • Other uses in the food industry included coffee decaffeination and the preparation of flavoring extracts from hops and spices.
  • Trichloroethylene has been widely used as a degreaser for metal parts.
  • Trichloroethylene was once used as an extract  in food processing and has been used as an anesthetic and analgesic for medical purposes.
  • It is used  as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts, used in adhesives, paint removers, typewriter correction fluids, and spot removers.
